In In 1991 my daughter Julie was born and I started a Bulletin Board Service (BBS) called Julie’s Dad. For those who did not experience that brief bit of technology a BBS was a computer system you called from your system using a telephone modem. (It won’t be long before I’ll have to explain what I mean by computer system, telephone and modem) Anyway people had discussions with others that connected to the systems on different topics. Most of Julie’s Dad topics dealt with being a dad and what that meant. I had Julie’s Dad connected to a “store and forward” network called BusiLink. It was a simple network of computers, each called at least two others in the network and shared the list of computers and phone numbers in the network; email from to another person on the network and shared discussion forum posts. In a matter of a week messages and posts were passed to the entire computer in the network. BusiLink was hobbyist type of network and never got connected to the growing internet this was because no-one wanted to pay to connect to the internet and then continue to pay for everyone else to connect through them. BBS systems grew in to systems AOL but Julie’s Dad shutdown in 1996 when I moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland.
Since then I have volunteered at being a webmaster for several organizations and now it seems WebPages are on their way out and “blogs” are taking their place. I started this new place; I hate the word blog, as a way of learning this new technology so I can transition the websites over. I plane to share pictures, video and things I would normally post to Facebook. Facebook is a nice platform but privacy is getting more of a concern. I am not hosting this at my home like Julie’s Dad was but on a dedicated server from BlueHost so the security opportunities are less but more than what is available from “the cloud.”
